October weekends John Flannagan Dam offers weekend releases that generate Class IV and V rapids through the gorge. Parties from both Virginia and Kentucky are currently working with the Army Corps of Engineers to expand dam releases.

FORF is a critical force encouraging the development of new hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. The Haysi-Breaks hike/bike trail is currently under development and will connect with the soon to be Great Eastern Trail that will run from Alabama to New York.

The Russell Fork River offers some excellent swimming spots but take care as there are no lifeguards and the river can be extremely treacherous!
